08/08 11:48 - Vanessa Bright - College Summer Student

My association with Roswell began when I was 12 and my youner brother was diagnosed with cancer. I spent a lot of time here during the years he was being treated. I am happy to say he is now cancer free!! I decided my senior year of high school to major in science and possibly continue into research to help fight the disease that affected my family in such a strong way. During my sophomore year in college I learned that RPCI had a summer student research program, but I had to wait until my junior year before I could apply. I was extatic when I was accepted to be a part of the Immunology lab for the summer. I met my mentor, Melissa, on my second day and found I would be working with T cells and analyzing proteins by Western blot. I learned what a lipid raft was and why they are importnant for the activation of T cells. During the summer I became a master at doing Western blots while obtaining data on the composition of lipid rafts. This summer has been a great learning experience.... and I also had a lot of fun too!!

Did Vanessa get a shirt for blogging as part of the summer program? Let me know so we can get that to her if not.

04/16 10:35 - Lab Outing To The Chocolate Bar

Our lab was treated to a lunch outing at The Chocolate Bar!! One of our PhD students, Adrienne, is getting married in just a few short weeks and we all went out to celebrate her approaching nuptials!! Even though we all work hard in the lab, we also have some time left over for a personal life as well.... not much, but some!! LOL The Chocolate Bar was fabulous for lunch and especially for dessert!!

04/08 08:57 - Happy Spring!

Happy Spring Everyone! It looks like the weather is about to break and soon it will be warm here in Buffalo!! We can hardly wait! During the warm weather it is nice to take a break during a busy research day and enjoy lunch outdoors in the park. If you have never been to Roswell Park, then you haven’t seen the beautiful grounds we have here. Our parks are lined with trees, flowers and beckoning benches. They offer a peaceful place for patients, visitors, and employees alike to relax and unwind for a moment. Soon those flowers will be in bloom! You are welcome to stop by and see them for yourself!

We are also anticipating the arrival of our summer student researchers! Roswell has a summer research program where both high school and college juniors can join our research labs to complete a 6 to 8 week research project! We have had some very talented students join us in the past and we are looking forward to the gifted young people who will be joining us in June. Maybe next year you could be among them?!
