Buffalo Bound! Minnesota Student Travels to Buffalo for Summer Research Experience

Getting hands-on lab experience, going on adventures with new friends and making a difference in cancer research—those are just a few of the things Ribhav Gupta experienced throughout his time in Roswell Park’s Summer Research Internship Program in Cancer Science this past summer.

“It was the internship that I was the most interested in, so when I got accepted into it I was ecstatic to come,” said Ribhav, a high school junior from Minnesota who jumped on the opportunity to further his knowledge as one of 27 high school students in the program.

The Summer Research Program immerses high school and college juniors in the life of a cancer researcher. Roswell Park research staff mentor the interns as they conduct their own cancer research project, expanding their scientific knowledge and developing laboratory skills.

Ribhav is interested in working in public health some day, so he was a perfect fit to work with Maciej Goniewicz, PhD, PharmD, on his study of whether South Korean e-cigarette liquid labels accurately represent how much nicotine is in the products.

“Basically, the summer program gave me the opportunity to apply the major concepts that I have learned throughout my school career in a productive and intriguing manner,” Ribhav said.

The program also provides different activities to help the students bond with one another, including trips to Darien Lake, a Buffalo Bisons game and Fourth of July cookout. Ribhav said his favorite activity was the soccer game that pitted the college interns against the high-school interns. These activities made it easier for Ribhav to make new friends away from home and enhanced his research experience.

The most spectacular part of the experience is that I got to feel like I was contributing something special to the world, even if my research only has a few implications,” Ribhav added.
