#PracticeSafeSun with Canisius College

Canisius College students in Dr. Wanzer’s Health Communication class created a unique campaign to spread skin cancer awareness. If this story inspires you to take action, contact Yroswell to find out how you, too, can help create a world without cancer!

When starting this campaign, we knew we wanted to spread awareness about a topic that could save lives. After learning that skin cancer is the most common of all cancers, yet also one of the most preventable types, we were motivated to spread the word. Our campaign really took flight after landing on our campaign name "Practice Safe S.EX [Sun EXposure]" with the tag line "Are You Protected?” This definitely got heads turning on campus, which really helped engage our peers.

To get our 20 Day Sunscreen Challenge started, we created a logo, ordered T-shirts and sunscreen packets to hand out, designed print materials that were hung around campus and featured in Canisius' Stall Street Journal, filmed a YouTube video, and started a Facebook page. Our campaign launched at Canisius' Relay for Life where students spun a sun safety trivia wheel, signed pledges to practice safe sun exposure, and received T-shirts and sunscreen for participating! We recruited more than 80 students to pledge to practice safe sun! To participate in the challenge, students were asked to post pictures of themselves using sunscreen with the hashtag #PracticeSafeSun. Random weekly winners were chosen and awarded gift cards, while the grand prize winner received a gift basket filled with sun safety goodies!

Overall, our team was extremely pleased with how this campaign turned out. We hope we were able to really get through to some people about this important and scary topic.
