Lewis Shavel Donates Hats to Roswell Park

One Student's Generosity Has No Cap!

Inspired by his grandmother, Ellie, a cancer survivor, Lewis Shaevel decided he wanted to make a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer. Last year he went Bald For Bucks at Transit Middle School and was the top fundraiser, raising almost $6,000! Although many would find that to be quite the accomplishment, Lewis was not done there. He still felt as though he could do more. After struggling to find a topic for his "mitzvah project," a project associated with his Bar Mitzvah, Lewis came up with a plan to combine his love for collecting baseball caps and his desire to help others; "Hats Off to Roswell" was born!

He tirelessly sought out donations from businesses like New Era Cap, Independent Health and the Buffalo Bisons and with their help, was able to collect an astounding 534 hats! The Buffalo Bills generously donated more than 150 hats and Lewis plans to continue collecting items to donate to Roswell Park. He visited the hospital to drop off the hats in the Resource Center and several extremely grateful patients hugged and thanked Lewis for his dedication and generosity. "I'm proud that I can do my part," Lewis said. His generosity has touched many hearts and is seen as a much greater gesture than just doing his part.

The hats are located in the Roswell Park Resource Center and are available to all patients.
